Just For Giggles

I wanted to share this because it makes me laugh. A friend and I were having a conversation on AIM about "slow news days." You know what I mean; days when nothing is really happening. Here's a tidbit from our conversation. I hope it at least makes you smile.

FRIEND: Oh like how the other day on CNN they had this story about how the underwire of a womans bra saved her life...

ME: nah, that's just weird interesting news

FRIEND: two wars. economic collapse. imminent pandemic. and really you're going to talk about the bra that saved the day?

ME: bad news. bad news. bad news. wouldn't you want some uplifting news? no pun intended

FRIEND: LMAO

Who knew I could be so funny? I sure didn't!

Rhymes, Sonnets and Couplets! Oh my!

How exciting! April is National Poetry Month. I happen to be a big fan of poetry. In fact before I became wrapped up in the world of journalism, I was constantly writing poetry (especially in those angst-y teen years).

One of my all-time favorite poets is Emily Dickinson. She was born December 10, 1830, in Amherst, Massachusetts, and spent most of her life as a recluse. She’s probably most famous for her “I’m Nobody! Who are you?” poem. She is also responsible for one of my favorite quotes: “A word is dead when it is said some say. I say it just begins to live that day.”

Here is one of my favorite poems by her:

Because I could not stop for Death,
He kindly stopped for me;
The carriage held but just ourselves
And Immortality.

We slowly drove, he knew no haste,
And I had put away
My labor, and my leisure too,
For his civility.

We passed the school where children played
At wrestling in a ring;
We passed the fields of gazing grain,
We passed the setting sun.

We paused before a house that seemed
A swelling of the ground;
The roof was scarcely visible,
The cornice but a mound.

Since then ’t is centuries; but each
Feels shorter than the day
I first surmised the horses’ heads
Were toward eternity.

What about you? Which poets do you enjoy reading? Do you write poetry? Please share!

An Apple a Day

Thanks to friends, blogs, etc., I've noticed a lot of "one-a-day" sites. You know, those sites that offer one thing a day. They're fairly entertaining. I figured I'd share a few I've come across that I enjoy.

If you're on the job search like many of us, I suggest One Day One Job. It mainly focuses on entry level jobs, but I'm sure anyone can benefit from it. The companies showcased on the site are often very unique and interesting companies.

Hey college students, they do the same thing for internships, too! Check out One Day One Internship. Maybe you'll find an internship that will change your entire life. You never know.

For those of you interested in quotes or motivation like me, check out Oneaday. It provides one Chinese idiom a day. It even shows how to write it in Chinese characters. Today's is "The road to happiness is always strewn with difficulties and setbacks."

I'd like to say I'm a writer, and sometimes I fall victim to writer's block. One Word provides a fun little exercise to help break free of the block. It gives you one word and you have one minute to write about it. It seriously times you though, so don't stop to delete and edit. Just let it flow.

Music is constantly playing in the background as I run through my chores of the day. It's pretty much replaced my habit of watching hours of TV. Even in school, I used to listen to music while writing papers, etc. It just helps me focus. So clearly, I welcome new music all the time leading me to tell you about OnesongOneday. It's just like the title suggests; one song each day.

Do you have any sites like this? I'd love to hear about more.

Motivation is Key

My yoga move update: So I managed to hold the first pose (the Scissor Legs Side Crow) for about two seconds. The second pose (the One-Legged Arm Balance) was a bit less successful. I could hold it for about half a second because I have not regained the flexibility necessary for this move. Therefore, combining the two hasn't quite happened. First I need to work on upper body strength and flexibility. But let's be clear: I -will- do this pose one day.

Running, however, is something that I don't have the same motivation for. I attempted to run on the treadmill today. Thank goodness I was the only one in the gym, so embarassing. So when I read the Words That Move You slideshow on FitSugar, I knew I had to share it. Here are some of my favorites:

"People often say that motivation doesn't last. Well, neither does bathing; that's why we recommend it daily." — Zig Ziglar

"Fall seven times, stand up eight." —Japanese proverb

"It's a dream until you write it down, and then it's a goal."– Anonymous

Treadmill, don't think I won't be back tomorrow. You're totally going down.

I can do whatever I want.

Hey all. New location, new life, new concept, new start. So welcome to the new blog!

"We stand now where two roads diverge. But unlike the roads in Robert Frost's familiar poem, they are not equally fair. The road we have long been traveling is deceptively easy, a smooth superhighway on which we progress with great speed, but at its end lies disaster. The other fork of the road—the one "less traveled by"—offers our last, our only chance to reach a destination that assures the preservation of the earth." --Rachel Carson
