Meet my roomies!

So like I mentioned in my last post, I recently had two new roomies move in. It's been a little over a month, but we're getting along pretty well. Their stuff has taken over the entire apartment, though. But here are the little chub-munsters.

Tommy is the orange tabby, and Marigold is the tortoise shell. They're approximately six years old. As I write this, Marigold is sleeping on the dining room table and Tommy is in the doorway of my bedroom. They sleep about 90 percent of the day. Here are more pictures for your (my) viewing pleasure.

Tommy hiding under the table.

Marigold mid-yawn.
Aren't they super adorable? Well it's getting late and tomorrow is Monday, so the chub-munsters and I heading to bed.

Hopefully more posts will follow. But let's be honest, only time will tell.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know.

Geez, is everyone blogging now? A friend somewhere always seems to be starting and updating a blog. Way to make a gal feel guilty, guys. The sad part is I really do think about updating this blog, and I come across interesting tidbits that I think should be shared. But after a 12-hour day, I simply have no urge to write a post.

So to jump back in, I'll update you on my three resolutions and new developments in my life. Then I'll make an attempt to start blogging again. But let's be clear--I'm not making any promises here.

Goal #1: Write more.
Reality:
While I don't really write much outside of work, I do feel like I'm getting to write a lot more--way more than I was writing on January 1, 2010. So I feel I've done well in that regard, and I hope it only improves from here.

Goal #2: Lose 5lbs.
Reality: HA! Unless I get my butt in gear in the next 5.5 months, this will not be happening. Along with no urge to post, I also have no urge to exercise. Just like thinking about posting, I think about working out on the commute home. Then I get home. And nothing happens.

Goal #3: Save three months rent.
Reality: This goal is actually progressing along nicely. We'll see what happens over the next month, but even if I fail, I am happy with what I've saved. I think the goal was a little lofty to begin with. Good thing I hate falling short of my own goals.

Other updates:

#1: I have two new furry roommates, Tommy and Marigold. We've actually been acquainted since 2007, but they've recently moved in. I inherited them from my grandma. I'll post photos later, and don't worry, I'm sure this blog will be full of their photos soon.

#2: I am still happily employed and living in the city, hence the change of name for the blog (again). And don't really have any other updates because, despite living in a big city, I still manage to live a boring life (which I enjoy, thanks).

And with that, I'm finishing this post and crawling into bed to read a book.

Three cheers to a boring life!

No, but really.

Well I didn't promise I'd write every day in my blog, now did I? I actually did do some writing over here though. It's about my New Year's resolutions, which you already know about because they're posted below.

I actually do have things to say on the blog, too. I think about them everyday while I'm at work doing actual work-related things. I would also post at night, but lately, I've been under the weather. So instead, I act like a lifeless blob covered in a snuggie. For real though, I love my snuggie.

So until I feel better or have something to report, this will have to keep you occupied.

PS: I'm looking for health/diet/fitness blogs to read for work-related purposes. Any suggestions?

I swear I'm not ignoring you.

Dearest blog,

I'm really sorry for the neglect lately. I've somehow been staying busy between my new writing ventures, the job search (which is getting better), going to the gym (yes! I'm still going strong!) and (gasp!) a social life.

Let's recap my life:

- You can check out my new articles on ChickSpeak about Tammy Tibbetts and the MacDella Cooper Foundation here, Project Girl here, "The Zookeeper's Wife" here and getting your car ready for a roadtrip here. If you're on Twitter, FOLLOW US at @ChickSpeak. We aren't a robot, and I know because I'm the official tweeter! If you're on Tumblr, FOLLOW US here. We'll follow back, too!

- I'm also writing at BizMe.biz. My first article is about the corporate dresscode. I have more coming though, so stay tuned.

- I have a part-time retail job now. (Hey, at least it's something. Although I've had to dress up and wear more makeup for this job than pretty much every other job/internship I've ever had.)

- I have friends and a social life. Sweeeet. I even went on an actual date recently with a guy who actually lives near me. (No more of those out-of-town boys. Although they were fun, haha.)

- I have serious job prospects on the line. I'm not big on talking about it because I do feel it might jinx me, so just keep your fingers crossed.

- My war with the treadmill is definitely going in my favor. In fact, I actually managed to KEEP my weight-related New Year's Resolution this year! I'm thinking of possibly running a 5k sometime this fall. Although my only worry is that I haven't really run outside (and by haven't really I mean haven't at all). Oh well, I suppose I'll try soon!

Ok, that's my recap. I have also been reading a lot about interesting topics in my blogs. Tomorrow I have a 5-hr bus ride back home, so I'm sure I'll end up not doing anything I'm supposed to be doing and blog. For some reason, that's what tends to happen.

Toodles for today,

Cassandra

Back in Business

Why hello my darling readers! Miss me much? Because I'm back!

I won't lie; the hiatus was rather enjoyable. Sometimes the pressure of blogging can be a little... much... even for a little ol' blog like mine. Also, lying by the pool instead of attaching myself to my laptop makes for a very happy Cassandra. Nevertheless, I think it's time to make a comeback.

I don't have much in terms of updates except that I've been taking time to figure out what I'm doing with my life. I've made some goals, so hopefully I can stick to them. Otherwise, I'll be back to posting all things that entertain, interest or intrigue me.

Enjoy!

Long-Term Hiatus

Hey, sorry for the blogging hiatus. Unfortunately, this isn't the end of it. I wanted to let my faithful readers know that I probably won't be blogging for much of June. I'm taking a little time to gather myself up and reevaluate things.

Thanks for being such great readers. I'll be back again bou really miss efore you know it. If you really miss me, feel free to drop me a comment or follow me on Twitter.

Toodles for now!

(Not) In the Mood

This week has not been all that great of a week. So I haven't really had any motivation to blog. But last night around 2am after watching Journey to the Center of the Earth and Sex and the City, I finally decided to do something. So I started to fold my laundry while listening to some music. (Let me tell you; there was A LOT of laundry.)

Anyways, Stand by Rascal Flatts started on my iTunes, and it made me feel a little better. So I wanted to share it with you guys to use when you're not having a good day.

Shameless Self Promotion

So I'm writing for a Web site, ChickSpeak.com. It's a pretty cool site, and I definitely believe in the mission. Here's my first article. Check it out!

Fun and Famous

Hello all. I'm back! Sorry I didn't post yesterday. I was suffering from a miserable migraine. Normally if I just relax, it passes. So I made a bowl of baby brussels sprouts (I love steamed veggies in the microwave!) and watched Hancock. Well, no luck, it just got worse and worse. So I slept it off.

Anyways, this weekend was fun. I saw a famous person--William H. Macy! Well actually my friend saw him first. He was running and ran right past us! I remember him from Air Force One, Pleasantville and Sahara. He and a whole slew of other celebrities were in town for the White House Correspondents Dinner. Fun, huh? DC really is becoming the new NYC. (Ok, maybe that's stretching it. But still I saw a celebrity in DC faster than I did in New York.) Cool huh?

I May Have Found Another Addiction

Remember how I told you I joined Twitter? (I actually really like it, too.) Well I kind of found a new thing to play with. It's not new, but I guess Twitter wasn't really knew either.

Anyways, I'm on Tumblr! You might think I'm crazy for starting another blog, but this will be my main fix for a blog. My Tumblr blog is just about little quotes or photos that catch my eye. It's my latest fix.

Are any of you on it?

Meeeeoww.

So if you haven't noticed by now, I'm a cat person. I can't wait until I have my own place and my own cat. Don't get me wrong though; I have two beautiful cats at my parent's home. One technically belongs to my brother and one is mine, but whatever. I could never just take mine (Malificent) away from her sister (Mercedes). I could never take both of them away for the dogs or my parents. So I must get my own cat. If it's a boy, I think I'll name it Maximus. I haven't figured out a girl's name yet.

Anyways, I'm reading this blog Lifehacker and they must be cat lovers over there because they have the cutest ideas. One of my favorites is the Cat Haven made from Ikea shelves. You need a little space, but the cat in the picture looks so happy. Another one of my favorites is the cat perch made from a wine crate. It's a great place for your cat, and it's rather stylish. I will definitely keep these ideas in mind for my future cats. Cute, huh?

Well this is even cuter. Check it out:

...love cats. Can't wait to adopt one.

I'm Still Thunking!

Look! I remembered my Thursday Thunk post. It was a nice break from writing these ridiculous essays for job applications. Like I said last week, if you start playing, let me know!

1. If you could skywrite anything you wanted, what would it be?

JOURNALIST LOOKING FOR JOB! HIRE ME!

2. Did you get drunk at your prom?

Nope. I didn’t really start to drink until after high school. I feel it’s pretty overrated anyways.

3. What is your favorite spice to use cooking?

Does my Bojangles seasoning count? I love using it on French fries, tater tots and anything else potato. Otherwise, I don’t really cook and couldn’t tell you what spice would be good in what. Sad, I know.

4. What color is your roof?

You know, I have no idea. I live in an apartment building and have never made it to the roof. I will once they open the sundeck though.

5. In a land far, far away I _____________

….won the lottery, bought an island and did whatever I pleased!

6. In the Miss USA pageant, Miss California was asked; "Vermont recently became the fourth state to legalize same sex marriage. Do you think every state should follow suit? Why or why not?" and her answer was; "Well I think it's great that Americans are able to choose one or the other. Um, we live in a land that you can choose same sex marriage or opposite marriage and, you know what, in my country and in, in my family, I think that I believe that a marriage should be between a man and a woman," Carrie said to a mix of boos and applause. "No offense to anybody out there. But that's how I was raised and that's how I think that it should be between a man and a woman." Do you think that cost her the crown?

Frankly, yes. I’m still glad she stuck to her beliefs though. Check below for my post on this subject.

7. Do you watch Miss USA/Miss America pageants?

Not usually, but I watched most of the one this year. When I was younger, I watched it all the time!

8. Have you ever driven/ridden on a tractor?

No, as a matter of fact. Have you?

9. For the parents - what cartoon/children show did your child watch obsessively? (Hey, if you aren't a parent, maybe a niece or nephew...)

Um, I am neither a parent nor an aunt. But I loved watching Doug, Zoobileezoo (or however you spell it), Rocco’s Modern Life, Hey Arnold, Rugrats, The Animaniacs, Pinky and the Brain… the list could go on forever. But I also played outside a lot, too, I promise!

10. If I set a level on your living room floor - would it show that it was level?

It depends. Are the people below me having a party and blasting the base? Because if so, you probably wouldn’t be able to get an accurate reading.

11. What was the last restaurant you ate at?

I don’t know if you could really count this as a restaurant, but I had dinner at this movie house near me that serves food while you watch the movie. It’s really fantastic! I LOVE IT!

12. What's the picture on your wall calendar for this month?

Two little green frogs. One frog has his hand (?) covering the other frogs face. It's an animal calendar. No offense to the frogs, but I hope it's a furry animal in May.

13. Are you superstitious?

Sometimes. I’m not scared of black cats. Some things get me though. I don't like walking under ladders or playing Bloody Mary.

14. If I get into your car and turn on the radio - what type of radio station will I hear?

It’s either the Pussycat Dolls CD or the Rascal Flatts CD. I have no idea what’s on the radio because I haven’t found a station I like here yet.

15. Would you rather wake up with a snake in your bed or a lizard?

This may sound weird, but I’d prefer a (non-venomous, if possible) snake because lizards really creep me out. I don't know; I just feel they shouldn't have legs. I'm getting goosebumps just thinking about them. YUK.

16. Do you think schools have changed at all since the Columbine tragedy 10 years ago? In what ways?

I think all schools were affected by Columbine. They’re more aware of these sorts of situations. Awareness is good. Some schools are more secure and many schools try to be. I’m sure there is more to talk about with this answer, but I don’t really like talking about it. Just a personal thing.

I Thunk I Can, I Thunk I Can

So my friend Cookie has recently started posting these “Thursday Thunks” posts. They seemed like fun, so I thought I’d jump on the bandwagon. Clearly these posts (when I remember it’s Thursday) will be a bit more on the personal side. I hope you enjoy it though, and if you start them too, let me know!

1. Recently Berleen and I discovered the allure of the Twilight series. Have you ever been sucked in to the latest "thing"? (Like Harry Potter, the movie Titanic, social networking, etc. etc. etc.)

Totally, I’ve already read the entire Twilight series. I’m kind of over that now. I’ve been doing the Facebook thing for a while, but I definitely hopped on the Twitter train. I actually like it, too. I never did the whole Harry Potter thing. I couldn’t get past the first page of the first book. I was 12-ish when Titanic came out, so Leo DiCaprio was (and still is) dreamy.

I think it’s safe to say I get sucked into the latest “thing” quite frequently.

2. What software do you use for your email?

I use Gmail. Is that considered software?

3. Are you comfortable being nude?

Quite honestly, no.

4. What is something you plan on doing this summer?

Go to Las Vegas with the girls! I’ve never been, so I’m super excited.

5. Do you have a favorite movie/book quote? If so, what is it?

A favorite? I can’t really pick one, so I’ll just share the one in my head.

“No, I don't think I will kiss you, although you need kissing, badly. That's what's wrong with you. You should be kissed and often, and by someone who knows how.”

Do you know who said it and what movie it was said in???

6. How many email addresses do you have?

Two. Although I rarely check my school address anymore.

7. Is the sky falling?

It sure seemed like it yesterday, but I hope not.

8. Have you been to the Grand Canyon?

No, but maybe when I go to Vegas, I’ll see the Grand Canyon, too. That’d be pretty neat.

9. When was the last time you mailed a hand written letter?

Last Thursday. I’ve had to write a lot of Thank You notes lately. That counts, right?

Karma Wednesday

Nothing like a little break for a holiday. I hope everyone had a nice Easter/Passover/weekend, etc. I thought I'd just leave you with a few tidbits today.

1) My friend Michael Northrop officially has his first YA book out: Gentlemen. You should definitely pick it up and read it. The cover itself makes me want to pick it up and read it, which I will when I head to a bookstore. Check out the story behind it. I am excited to get my book autographed, too. Also, once upon a time, our luck/successes seemed to be closely linked, so hopefully, his luck will soon kickstart mine. He even has another book coming out in 2009: Trapped. Congrats!

2) My mile is getting better! I can run longer, too. How exciting. Although, I have some beef with health magazines (SELF included) and Web sites. I've recently decided I would try "interval sprinting" because I hear it helps trim tummy fat more than just running regularly. So I looked into some "rountines" to try out like this one. YEESH! Can you make a beginner running rountine please? I'm excited if I run 15-2o mins with maybe one minute of running a little faster than ususal. I tried to add a few interval sprints today and ended up with my left foot cramping up. Oh well. I guess I'll try again tomorrow.

3) It's TAX DAY. Hope you turned in your taxes, get a sweet refund and scored some great deals today. I actually turned in my taxes a while ago and got my tax refund. It sort of funded my visit to NY back in March.

Ok, I think I'm going to spend some time reading before bed. I'm currently reading Women & Fiction: Short stories by and about women. It was published in 1975. So far, it's not bad, but I really did not enjoy Gertrude Stein's Miss Furr and Miss Skeene. Good night for now.

Break for Easter

Hi there, sorry for the lack of postings. Last week was pretty busy, and I'm currently spending some time with my family for Easter, etc. But check out the cutest little bear cubs I saw today. (Regular posting should return around Tuesday or Wednesday.)

I Want to Smell Like a Tar Heel!

I’ve been meaning to post about this forever, but I suppose now is a great time with it being March Madness and UNC in the FINAL FOUR!

Masik is a fairly new fragrance company that just can’t leave its college years behind. So what’s their solution? Collegiate perfumes and colognes! So far only UNC-Chapel Hill and Penn State have fragrances, but they have a bunch of other colleges smells on the way.

So how does one create the essence of a college in a bottle? At Masik, they consider school colors, mascot spirit, traditions and history, landmarks and architectural style, campus trees and flowers, mission statements, college town character, and themes in the alma mater and fight songs. Strange to think those things matter when making a scent, but according to them:

“Of the five senses, only our sense of smell is linked directly to the brain’s limbic system or emotional control center. Because of this link, a particular scent or fragrance can evoke memories and emotions before we are even consciously aware of them.”

So what are the deets? A 3.4 oz bottle of UNC-CH’s women perfume costs $60. (Yikes, someone buy it for me?) You can buy it on their Web site or UNC Student Stores or Johnny T-Shirt in Chapel Hill or a few random other places. (And to be honest, I don’t care much about the other scents or where you can buy them.)

Crazy, right? Do you want to smell like your college? Because I kind of want to see what Carolina smells like…

How Exciting!

I'm so proud of myself today, and I want to share the reason why with all of you!

I ran TWO miles today on the treadmill in 25 minutes (five minute cool down included). I don't know how I kept running, but I did. AND I wasn't even really watching TV. I was listening to music though. This, my friends, is a milestone in the ongoing quest to conquer the treadmill.

Treadmill, you are so going down. Victory is MINE!

Am I an Apple or a Pear?

Isaiah sent me a post from Jezebel (Great blog; strongly suggest you read it.) titled “In Which We Explore The Ridiculousness Of "Dressing For Your Shape.” He suggested I post about it instead of him. Personally, I’m interested in his point of view, but nonetheless, here’s my side.

The post generally explains that the names for the body sizes that many magazines use to help us readers shop for clothes are fairly ridiculous, dated and offensive. You know the body sizes I’m talking about: pear-shaped, tall, boyish, etc.

This quote pretty much sums it up: “Which is all well and good, I suppose, unless you happen to be a Pear-Shaped Busty Tall Woman looking for ideas on Plus-Size gowns, because the advice for each category is markedly different, which would lead many women to believe that there are only certain aspects of their bodies that are truly worth addressing, as opposed to concentrating on what fits and feels good.”

I have to say I completely agree. I have absolutely no idea what “size” my body is. (Although, at 5 foot 3 and a half inches, I can pretty much forget the “tall” part.) Even my beloved SELF magazine (I really do love this magazine) trips me up with their body sizes: top-heavy, thick-waisted, petite and bottom-heavy. To be honest, a lot of the time I just flip past those pages because I get annoyed trying to figure out what I am. And sometimes, I like a look that isn't for my body type (I think), which makes me a little sad inside. Should I not wear that? WHY NOT?

And I really hate it when they have articles about picking out jeans. First off, standing in front of a mirror trying to judge what my behind is shaped like and so forth is never enjoyable. (Although I do remember an article in Glamour, I think, that had a story about buying jeans from Web sites that designed—almost molded—jeans to your exact measurements, which I enjoyed.)

I also hate some of the beauty articles for that matter, too. I cannot, for the life of me, tell what shape my face is, which leads me to become a nervous wreck because what if I pick the wrong haircut and look… well, ugly.

First, I’m sad because I can’t wear the clothes I think are cute. Second, I’m sad because my behind and a mirror are not the best of friends. Third, I’m sad because the haircut I want won’t look right. Anyone else noticing the trend?

Instead of helping you feel better about “shopping for your type,” magazines really are kind of making things worse. Pointing out trends or even how to mix simple articles of clothing is cool for the most part. And I know there is a good intention behind helping us shop for our type, but it just has the opposite affect for me. So I’ll stick to the traditional shopping route. If I like it, I’ll try it on. If it looks good, then it was made for my body type. End of story.

Wake-Up Call

SELF magazine had a really interesting article in the March 2009 issue, “Single, pregnant and panicked.” When I read it, it shocked me and made me think. Then Salon.com wrote a blog post about the article, and it made me want to talk about it here.

The general point of the story in SELF is this: Unexpected teen pregnancies are not the bulk of unexpected pregnancies. That said, guess who makes up the bulk. Females in their 20s do. Women like me. Wow.

The beginning of the post on Salon.com starts with this: “About half of American women will have an accidental pregnancy before the age of 45.” I’m sure that not all of those women are single, nor are all of those pregnancies are unwanted. In fact, to be honest, I was unexpected. My parents were planning on waiting another year or so, but clearly I was a little impatient to get my life started.

But why the (for the most part) college-educated woman in her 20s? Some ideas include getting married later in life, but still being sexually active; living with their partners; and even being forced into having unprotected sex. SELF continues to say that birth rates may have increased because more unmarried women are deciding to keep their babies. I think maybe it’s partly a lack of education about the proper use of birth control or just not properly using birth control or this ridiculous notion some of us have that “it will never happen to me.”

But I think this quote says a lot: "It's confusing to talk about it," says Shanti Kulkarni, Ph.D., assistant professor in the department of social work at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. "It's easier to coalesce around this idea that it's not good for teenagers to get pregnant. It's not as clear what pregnancy means for the life of a woman in her 20s." For some women, surprise motherhood ends up being the blessing of a lifetime. Others choose abortion with no regrets. But the high rate of unintended pregnancy remains distressing, Kulkarni says, because "it suggests that women are not as in control of their sexuality and childbearing as we would hope."

Scary, isn’t it though? How do you go about solving it? Or should it be labeled as a problem? You can’t really tell a 20-something-year-old woman that sex is bad. You can tell her unprotected sex is bad, but chances are she knows that. What approach do you take? I’m glad SELF decided to run this story though because at least it brings about awareness.

The part Salon.com picks up is that in all the examples of SELF the women either give the child up for adoption or keep their child, but end up needing support from family. The article lacks two major points of view: the women who had an abortion and the woman who kept her baby and continued to support herself and child. I kind of agree. Thanks SELF for bringing this out into the public, but we need to flesh out the whole story. What happens to those women? What was their decision making process like? Do they come out ok, too?

By sharing all sides of the story, doesn’t that make you a little more educated at least in your choices should you ever become pregnant? And beyond the women, what about the men? I know SELF is a woman’s magazine, but shouldn’t someone inform men that, guess what, this girl in the story could be your girlfriend, and you’re about to have a baby.

I’ve never been in this situation, and I pray I never am. I’ve known a lot of women in this position though. So not to be a Debbie Downer, but remember, a lot of you are 20-something-year-old women, a lot of you are dating 20-something-year-old women, a lot of you have 20-something-year-old daughters, a lot of you have sons who are dating 20-something-year-old women.

Please read both stories. Let it sink in. If you want to chat about it, leave a comment or e-mail me.

PS: If you plan to comment about it, I’d prefer no negativity. I realize everyone’s opinions are different, but being that this is my blog, I ask you to be respectful. Otherwise, I’ll delete the comment. The point of this post is to bring awareness; not to judge.

Living on the Wild Side

Those adorable clouded leopard babies make me want a kitty so bad! I was watching “Cats 101” on Animal Planet the other night, and I found the perfect cat for me—the Savannah! It’s a crossbreed between a Serval and a domestic cat. Check out that picture! What a cutie!

Unfortunately, because they’re exotic, they are clearly going to be expensive. It looks like they range anywhere from $1,500 to $20,000. (That’s right; I looked around.) So I probably won’t be getting one unless I win the lottery. If that happens, I’ll have a house full of Savannahs! I also can’t have one if I want to live in New York City, Alaska, Iowa, Hawaii, Massachusetts or Georgia. Lame.

Nevertheless, you can get them with different degrees of “wildness.” I think I would like a 75 percent domestic 25 percent serval combination, which would be an F2 Savannah. They’re also a little bigger than your average cat and tend to have long legs. You can train your kitty to go on walks on a leash and to play fetch! They tend to enjoy water, too. Also they can “chortle” like their wild counterparts do or they might purr like their domestic counterparts or both. They also have a snake-like hiss; so great.

Doesn't this kind of make you want one, too?
